In 1989, a group of students from the 3rd Gymnasium of Kalamata at the French class with the help of their teacher Letta Petroulaki were taught Moliere's work " The Hypochondriac (Le Malade imaginaire) " in a different way : through the magic of the theater, far away from the conventional school lessons. 

It was the sparkle that made them create a permanent teenage theater club. The reasons for this were deeper and more serious: The willing to develop a spirit of cooperation, to use their free time in a creative way, as well as their will power to contribute to the cultural movement within the student space and to improve it.

In 1991 the group takes legal status, as an amateur theatrical and cultural association, of a non-profit nature, exclusively for secondary school students and is called EXPERIMENTAL SCENE OF KALAMATA. In 2002, after the establishment of a University community University students are included to the theater group as well. 

From the very beginning till today, the experimental scene of Kalamata has been active in various fields: with the held and the collaboration with several important directors, musicians, scenographers and choreographers we organize theater performances, cultural events, puppet theater, theater play classes for young children, literary evenings, art and theater workshops for adults.

From the funding day till today, over 70 theater performances (all plays from Greek and international repertoire as ancient drama as well, are staged and performed. Thousands of young people participated and, played under the curtain of the Experimental Stage. The participants have lean acting, and they presented their work at festivals in Greece and abroad and in during this wonderful journey, gained some of the most beautiful experiences of their adolescence.

Since 2000, a puppet theater group of adults has been created. Its members were trained in special seminars for puppet making and animating and have staged over 25 puppet shows till today. They collaborate with the direction of Primary Education promoting puppetry as an important educational school tool.

In the framework of Kalamata’s candidacy as European culture Capital 2021 was proposed to hold an International Puppet Theater Festival. The Experimental Stage took the initiative to organize in 2017 the first Panhellenic Puppet Theater Festival of Kalamata, which it has been repeated the next 3 years. The people of Kalamata have been embraced these initiatives. The quality of the festival context and organisation and the people’s hospitality have been recognized in the international community of puppeteers.

Therefore in 2021, the 5th Festival took on an international character by hosting award-winning troupes not only from Greece, but from Europe as well. 

The Kalamata Puppet Theater Festival

The 1st Kalamata Panhellenic Puppet Theater Festival took place on May 12-16, 2017. At the facilities of Kalamata’s Municipal Regional Theatre where:

  • 9 different groups with
  • 19 puppeteers took part
  • 15 performances were presented
  • 5 workshops with
  • 7 trainers were organized in which
  • 70 adults took part
  • 1800 students attended the performances in the morning
  • 800 visited the afternoon plays unteers
  • 25 volunteers helped in the organization.
An open air theater puppet making workshop for children was organized at the railway Park. The performances in the morning were attended by 1,800 students, and in the afternoon by 800 visitors, while 25 volunteers helped in the organization.

The 2nd Kalamata Panhellenic Puppet Theater Festival took place on May 7-13, 2018, at the facilities of Kalamata’s Municipal Regional Theater as well as the Amphitheater of the Kalamata Philharmonic Orchestra with:

  • 14 groups and
  • 36 puppeteers participated presenting
  • 47 performances
  • 9 workshops and
  • a giant doll exhibition was presented
  • A puppet parade was held with the participation of 500 citizens
  • The shows were attended in the morning by 2,500 students and in the afternoon by 1,800 visitors
  • 50 volunteers participated.

The 3rd Kalamata Panhellenic Puppet Theater Festival took place on May 12-19 , 2019 in two rooms: at the Central Stage of the Municipal Regional Theater and the amphitheater of the Municipal Philharmonic.

  • 20 groups
  • 48 puppeteers took part
  • 47 performances were presented
  • 10 workshops for adults were organized
  • 3 open air theater events
  • 2 shows at the festival venues took place
  • 3000 students from 120 schools of Kalamata and the wider region attended the performances in the morning, while in the afternoon
  • 1800 spectators attended
  • 50 creative volunteers helped

The 4th Kalamata Panhellenic Puppet Festival has been postponed from May 10-17, 2020 to October 4-18, 2020 due to the covid 19 pandemic. The performances took place in the atrium foyer at Kalamata’s Culture Center (Pnevmatiko Kentro). Despite all the adversities:

  • 16 troupes participated
  • 40 puppeteers took part
  • 19 puppet shows were presented
  • 3 workshops and
  • a puppet show took place
  • 300 students from 5 schools attended the morning performances from 5 schools in the city, while over
  • 1,000 people enjoyed all the activities
  • 41 volunteers helped in the organization
Meanwhile, in collaboration with the Directorate of Primary Education, the first puppet theater school started with 6 seminars about the theatrical puppet and its role in the classroom. The 4thPanhellenic Kalamata Puppet Theater Festival was the only one in Greece that took place. It gave a breath of support to the artists and a strong dose of optimism to all the residents of our area.

The 5th Kalamata Puppet Theater Festival in 2021, turned international and hosted 28 troupes from Greece and abroad. It lasted 8 days from October 3rd to October 10th, 2021.

  • 50 puppeteers participated
  • 51 performances were held in Kalamata, Nafplio, as well as at thematic Museums of Dimitsana, Stymfalia and Volos
  • 2 12-hour workshops for adults (giant puppet and yarn puppet)
  • 1 three-hour theater puppet animation seminar
  • 2 theatrical events and
  • 3 theatrical puppet exhibitions were organized
  • 1,400 students attended the morning performances and
  • 2,000 spectators in the afternoon ones.

The 6th International Puppet Festival of Kalamata returned to its original dates in May, following the stabilization of the public health situation after the pandemic and the lifting of protective measures. For the second consecutive year, the festival featured not only Greek artists but also international participants, with collaborating countries including Germany, Spain, and Bulgaria. A total of 18 puppet theatre companies participated, presenting 35 performances. As part of the festival program, there were 3 specialized seminars/workshops on puppet construction and animation, along with 5 street events held in open-air public spaces such as Kalamata’s central square, main streets, and the OSE Municipal Park. Additionally, three exhibitions dedicated to theatrical puppetry were organized. The festival collaborated with several institutions, including the University of the Peloponnese (Department of Theatre Studies in Nafplio), the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, and also presented shows at the Open-Air Water Power Museum in Dimitsana. Financial support came not only from national, regional, and local authorities, but also from local foundations such as the Georgios & Viktoria Karelia Foundation, the Captain Vassilis & Carmen Konstantakopoulos Foundation, as well as from the Embassy of Spain.
The festival took place from May 21 to May 29, 2022.

With its emphasis on creativity, scientific approach, commitment to education, and pedagogical character, the Festival is establishing itself in the public consciousness as a high-quality cultural event of significance.

Το 7ο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Κουκλοθέατρου Καλαμάτας πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 16-24 Οκτωβρίου 2023.  Σε αυτό πήραν μέρος 17 θίασοι, 35 κουκλοπαίκτες, παρουσιάστηκαν 37 παραστάσεις, διοργανώθηκαν 10 εργαστήρια για ενήλικες και παιδιά, με τη συμμετοχή 200 ενηλίκων, εκπαιδευτικών και παιδιών. Κατά τη διάρκεια του φεστιβάλ πραγματοποιήθηκαν 5 ανοιχτά θεατρικά δρώμενα, στα οποία πήραν μέρος περίπου χίλια πεντακόσια άτομα, καθώς και 2 εκθέσεις θεατρικής κούκλας στους χώρους διεξαγωγής του φεστιβάλ και σε συνεργασία με το Εμπορικό Σύλλογο Καλαμάτας σε 82 καταστήματα της πόλης κόσμησαν τις βιτρίνες .τους με θεατρικές κούκλες από τη συλλογή του συλλόγου, προβάλλοντας έτσι και τις δράσεις του Φεστιβάλ.
Οι παραστάσεις διενεργήθηκαν σε 2 κεντρικές θεατρικές αίθουσες της πόλης  το Αμφιθέατρο του Πνευματικού Κέντρου Καλαμάτας και  το Αμφιθέατρο του Εργατικού Κέντρου Καλαμάτας.  Οι παραστάσεις δόθηκαν το πρωί στην πρωινή εκπαιδευτική ζώνη σε 1550 μαθητές από 30 σχολεία της Καλαμάτας και της ευρύτερης περιοχής -Θουρία, Μεσσήνη, Σπερχογεία-, ενώ το απόγευμα οι θεατές που παρακολούθησαν σε κλειστούς και υπαίθριους χώρους ανέρχονται στους 2000 και το κόστος του εισιτηρίου ήταν 5 ευρώ για τους ενήλικες και 3 ευρώ για τα παιδιά και δωρεάν για τα ΑμεΑ και τους ανέργους, όπως και δωρεάν στους ανοιχτούς χώρους για όλους. 

Το 8ο Φεστιβάλ Κουκλοθέατρου Καλαμάτας πραγματοποιήθηκε 12-20 Οκτωβρίου 2024 στην Καλαμάτα, Τρίπολη και Σπάρτη και κέρδισε την απόλυτη αποδοχή και ανταπόκριση κοινού και θεατών κάθε ηλικίας. 
Ο απολογισμός της διοργάνωσης του 8ου Φεστιβάλ αναφέρει:
-Παραστάσεις από 6 χώρες: Ισπανία, Αγγλία, Ελβετία, Πολωνία, Γερμανία, Ελλάδα
-Εξακτίνωση σε 7 πόλεις της Περιφέρειας Πελοποννήσου
-Συνεργασία με τα δύο άλλα μεγάλα ελληνικά φεστιβάλ κουκλοθέατρου για την παρουσίαση ομάδων από το εξωτερικό
-Υποστήριξη από Πρεσβεία Ισπανίας και Ινστιτούτο Θερβάντες
-Διάκριση με το EFFE Label 2024-2025 των ευρωπαϊκών ποιοτικών φεστιβάλ τεχνών
-Συμμετοχή 45 εθελοντών που πλαισίωσαν τη διοργάνωση
-Συμμετοχή 42 σχολείων με 1.660 μαθητές  που παρακολούθησαν τις πρωινές παραστάσεις και 960 θεατών τις απογευματινές σε  δύο θεατρικές αίθουσες.
-Παρουσίαση δωρεάν παραστάσεων σε 300 μαθητές από 6 ειδικά σχολεία και 2 σχολεία με Ρομά μαθητές.

Πρέπει ωστόσο να αναφέρουμε και τις συνέπειες των δυσκολιών της διοργάνωσης του 2024, που εξάντλησαν τις δυνάμεις μας και μας οδηγούν στην εντατικοποίηση των προσπαθειών μας να τεθεί το Φεστιβάλ σε πιο στέρεες βάσεις για να συνεχίσει να υπάρχει και να αναπτύσσεται:
Ενώ λάβαμε 44 αιτήσεις, συμμετοχής στο Φεστιβάλ  Κουκλοθεάτρου, 22 θιάσων από Ελλάδα, και 22 από 9 χώρες της Ευρώπης και από τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο, αποφασίσαμε να δεχτούμε 26 ομάδες. 
-Χρειάστηκε όμως, από αυτές  να ακυρωθούν,  οι συμμετοχές 8 ελληνικών ομάδων  και 5 ξένων με τις οποίες είχαμε ήδη δεσμευθεί βάσει σχεδιασμού. 
-Δεν στάθηκε δυνατό να υλοποιηθούν επαγγελματικά σεμινάρια και εργαστήρια κατά τη διάρκεια του Φεστιβάλ, διότι ακυρώσαμε ένα 12ωρο εκπαιδευτικό εργαστήρι ενηλίκων. . 
-Δεν στάθηκε δυνατό να διοργανωθούν πολλές παραστάσεις σε ανοιχτούς χώρους που είναι δωρεάν για τον κόσμο.
-Χρειάστηκε να αυξηθεί η τιμή των εισιτηρίων σε κάποιες παραστάσεις, πράγμα που δεν θα θέλαμε να επαναληφθεί στο μέλλον γνωρίζοντας τις οικονομικές δυσκολίες που αντιμετωπίζει η ελληνική οικογένεια. 
-Οι δυσκολίες προέκυψαν εκ αιτίας της ελάχιστης οικονομικής χρηματοδότησης από το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού, που ήταν μικρότερη από 1/3 της περσινής (4.500,00 μόλις ευρώ). Το συμπέρασμα στο οποίο έχουμε καταλήξει, από την εμπειρία μας με την εθελοντική ενασχόλησή μας στη διοργάνωση του Φεστιβάλ, είναι ότι για να μπορέσει να συνεχίσει με επιτυχία και να ανθίσει βελτιούμενο συνεχώς, είναι ότι εκτός από την υποστήριξη χορηγών Ιδρυμάτων ή μορφωτικών και πολιτιστικών Ινστιτούτων χρειάζεται να έχει μια μόνιμη πλαισίωση μέσω πολυετούς προγραμματικής σύμβασης με το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού, σε συνεργασία με το Δήμο Καλαμάτας και την Περιφέρεια Πελοποννήσου ώστε τα επόμενα Φεστιβάλ να υλοποιούνται σε νέες, πιο σταθερές και αποτελεσματικές συνθήκες.

Το 9ο Φεστιβάλ Κουκλοθέατρου Καλαμάτας θα λάβει χώρα 11-19 Οκτωβρίου 2025, με παραστάσεις στην Καλαμάτα, δρώμενα και δραστηριότητες, δωρεάν εργαστήρια για παιδιά, εντατικό εργαστήριο για επαγγελματίες, δωρεάν παραστάσεις σε 4 ειδικά σχολεία καθώς και δράσεις εκτός Καλαμάτας όπως, δωρεάν παραστάσεις σε Τρίπολη, Σπάρτη, Άργος, Κόρινθο, 2 δωρεάν παραστάσεις στα Θεματικά Μουσεία Υδροκίνησης  Δημητσάνας και Περιβάλλοντος Στυμφαλίας και 2 εργαστήρια κατασκευής και εμψύχωσης θεατρικής κούκλας  στους Γαργαλιάνους και στη Μεθώνη. The festivals are organized on the initiative of the Experimental Stage of Kalamata in collaboration with the Municipality of Kalamata. Their actions are focusing on the following fields:

  • Artistic work
  • Scientific framework
  • Specialized training and
  • Educational value.

Collaborating and supporting organizations are the University of Peloponnese, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia, The Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, the Onassis Foundation, Department of Theater Studies of the University of the in Nafplion, FARIS, Public Benefit Enterprise, the Kalamata’s Philharmonic Orchestra and the Messenia Directorate of Primary Education. 

All the Festivals were financially supported in a percentage by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Region of Peloponnese, the Municipality of Kalamata, the Foundations of the region. They were greatly assisted by the voluntary participation of creative volunteers.
